Ol Doinyo Lengai – The Sacred “Mountain of God” Adventure
Located near the shimmering Lake Natron, home to hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos, Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of Tanzania’s most unique natural wonders. Known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, this active volcano is the only one in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava, often called “cold lava”. Unlike typical lava, it flows like water and has a striking dark-brown to black color, with a relatively lower temperature of 510–600°C (still not something to touch!).
In the last century, Ol Doinyo Lengai has erupted about 15 times, the most recent being in 2013. Fortunately, its remote location and modest size make it safe to visit, and climbing it is a truly once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Ol Doinyo Lengai Climbing Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha – Lake Natron
Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. The scenic drive to Lake Natron is long but breathtaking, passing through stunning landscapes, Maasai villages, and occasional wildlife sightings.
Upon arrival at Lake Natron Camp, you’ll check in and enjoy lunch before heading out on a guided walk to Ngare Sero Waterfall. The trail winds through a picturesque gorge, and you may need to cross streams—so pack comfortable sandals! Later, visit the lakeshore for incredible photo opportunities of the alkaline lake, flamingos, and surrounding volcanic scenery. Return to camp for dinner and a restful night.
Day 2: Trekking Ol Doinyo Lengai – Return to Arusha
Your adventure begins at 1:00 AM with a transfer to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai for an early-morning summit attempt. This climb is challenging and steep, with loose volcanic ash underfoot, so pacing yourself is essential. Short breaks every 100 meters will help with acclimatization.
The trek takes 7–12 hours round-trip, depending on fitness. As you ascend, watch the night sky fade into a golden sunrise over the Rift Valley—a truly magical sight. Reaching the crater rim at 2,960 meters, you’ll witness smoke rising and hear the rumble of lava deep inside this sacred volcano.
After a quick descent (take care—most injuries happen on the way down), you’ll return to camp for a refreshing shower and lunch before your drive back to Arusha.
This is not just a climb—it’s an epic adventure combining volcanic geology, Maasai culture, and unmatched natural beauty.
